American Civil War - American Civil War - The Southern home front: By the war was taking a clear toll on the civilians of both sides. The Union had the Copperheads. Labour shortages and inflation also complicated life for Northerners, though on the whole the economy boomed in the North during the war. Whatever difficulties Yankees experienced paled in comparison with those of Southerners.   The book discusses the political, social and military events of the Civil War era, starting with the events that led up to the war, such as the Dred Scott case and John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry, and ties them all together to explain why the war occurred in the first place.

The American Civil War (also known by other names) was a civil war in the United States from to , fought between the northern United States (loyal to the Union) and the southern United States (that had seceded from the Union and formed the Confederacy). The civil war began primarily as a result of the long-standing controversy over the enslavement of black : Ap – April 9, (3 years, days). William E. Woodward, Meet General Grant (New York: H. Liveright, ), James Ford Rhodes, History of the Civil War, – (New York: Macmillan, ), Woodrow Wilson, “Anti-Slavery History and Biography,” Atlantic Monthly 72 (): – Eric Foner writes (xi) that the Dunning School “did more than reflect prevailing prejudices—they strengthened and helped. The pre–Civil War years (–, or the “antebellum years”) were among the most chaotic in American history—a time of significant changes that took place as the United States came of age. During these years, the nation was transformed from an underdeveloped nation of farmers and frontiersmen into an urbanized economic powerhouse.

Doyle does give a brief mention at the start of the book about why the Civil Rights movement in the s follows a direct trajectory from Civil War politics. The war actually served as a wake-up call to southern writers to find the niche of Southern Literature, which would come to fruition over the following decades. Fiction did find its place, however; British literature found an audience, and a new translation of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables was oddly popular during the Civil War. 22 hours ago  ‘The Scourge of War’ Review: A Long March Into Myth Sherman was an erudite, complicated man, far from the monster created by Southern apologists after the Civil War.
